Blind Sunflowers

In reading a poem from one of my favorite authors Amy Carmichael, a line rang from the page with imagery for our time in the Son.

“Flood me with hope today for souls perverse, undone, for sinful souls that turn away, blind sunflowers from their sun”.

Blind Sunflowers. In nature this is impossible. The root being and core design of the sunflower is to follow the gaze of the sun across the hours of the day, bending it’s head in prayer at the drawing in of the day.  Yet is it possible for the image bearers to so deny the essence of our creation, the knowledge of the Holy in our souls that like the sunflower in Carmichael’s poem, we turn away from the warmth and light of life by whom we have been granted motion, bios, breathe, and being.   Can we force ourselves to be blind to the movements of The Spirit and stand rigid in our days darkened, and dance-less, and unaware of the festival of the living rhythm of The Son?  Oh Maker, open the eyes of our heart, that those who want, may see. That those who thirst may drink. That those who hear may know.

Hope Through Me

by:  Amy Carmichael

“Hope through me, God of Hope,

Or never can I know

Deep wells and living streams of hope,

And pools of overflow.

Flood me with hope today

Four souls perverse, undone,

For sinful souls that turn away,

Blind sunflowers, from their Sun.

O blessed Hope of God,

Flow through me patiently,

Until I hope for everyone

As Thou hast hoped for me. “

  1. After laying in bed, unable to get back to sleep for a couple of hours, I climb out of bed and find this poem awaiting me on facebook. It is particularly fitting considering that prior to dragging my body out of bed I had been praying for different people in my life. As each face would appear in my mind I would speak to the Lord about them. For some of them there were prayers that specific needs would be met while for others I simply thanked the Lord for having brought them into my life and asked that the Lord continue to bless them and to continue to bless others through them. As i pondered the blessing that so many people have been to me in my life, the scripture from John 7:38 came to mind. “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”. That living water flowing from the belief of others has met the needs of my spirit many many times. And in varying degrees. At times, it rushes in, mighty and powerful and deep, so abundant is the water that I am swept away in it’s current.. At other times, as i am exploring the vast beautiful forest of this life I inadverttently stumble upon a clear cool refreshing stream. And then there are those times when I am conversing with a friend and, because they see the symptoms of thirst, I am offered a drink of that living water. The cup is offered to me at the hands of one who knows the source of the well and as the words of the conversation flow to my ears, the touch of hand of God refreshes my soul.

Father thank you for giving each one of us the opportunity, the potential, and even the responsibility to deliver your life flow to others. Whether it be from the deepest part of the river, the small streams that flow in the high country, or the domestic cups that are shared in the households of those who believe.
